A piece of art unto itself, the markings on a musician’s music are personal and indicate the hard work that came before the performance.  This musician has performed the Concerto in D Minor, Op. 47 many times, and each time the performer has found something new to express to their audience.

A performer often uses color-coding to call specific attention to certain aspects of the music: rhythm, dynamics, melody, harmony, tone color, or texture.  These markings, often called marginalia, remind the musician to bring the notes to life. The purple highlights a crescendo in dynamics. The blue signifies the importance of precise rhythms. The word “natural” written in pink reminds the performer to play this bar as part of a larger musical phrase – to sing out naturally at the height of its musical expression.

At its purest form, music is an emotional conversation between a performer and their audience. Before a performance, a musician explores every bar of music to effectively communicate the emotion within the notes. It is this attention to detail and dedication to the expression of the music that leads to powerful performances of great works of art.
